is Readers Theatre? There are lots of different definitions,
but basically, Readers Theatre means performers on stage, reading from a script.
In our case, we've developed a script by pulling together existing works and works
we (several of the students) have written. Our script incorporates poetry, prose,
short scenes from plays, monologues, and more, linked under the general topic
of "relationships," and organized to tell a storyor, more accurately,
many stories.
We won't be in costume (though we will be in character).
There won't be complex action or fancy sound effects. The set design will be whatever
Bas Bleu has in place for its current show. To quote instructor John Hill, "Readers
Theatre strips away all the trappings of conventional theatre, leaving the most
elemental components of interpretive performance, The Actor and The Script. It
falls to the performer to create for the audience, through economic use of voice,
facial expression, and body gesture, the environs, emotions, and moods of a given
piece." Sometimes Readers Theatre is a traditional script that has
also been produced as conventional theatre (see Bas
Bleu's web site for examples from this year's season). Sometimes it's more
varied or experimental, as is the case for the THE 218 production. The best
way to understand Readers Theatre is to experience it for yourself-so join us
at Bas Bleu Theatre on April 29! |
